Buyers beware: The EPA says it has stopped issuing water heater permits in many states after the agency found that some manufacturers had violated their regulations.

The EPA says the change in policy is part of a larger effort to address the safety and efficacy of electric water heaters, which can heat homes up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) without using much power.

The agency says the agency will no longer issue permits for these units.

The changes come amid an unprecedented spike in wildfires in parts of the West.

Since the start of the year, more than 30 wildfires have burned across the West, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

More than 40 people have died and more than 3,000 have been injured in the wildfires.
