The average American household uses about 1,000 gallons of water a year to heat their home, and that number is expected to increase in the coming years, according to the Water Quality Association.

The group estimates that if the number of Americans who can heat their homes increases, that could mean a cost of $1 billion to $2 billion a year, depending on how quickly homes are cleaned.

The association says the problem of water leaks in homes is growing in the U.S., and is costing an estimated $1.6 billion a day.
